Abstract
1,178,109. Purifying combustion gases. COMBUSTION ENG. Inc. 3 Nov., 1966 [29 Dec., 1965], No. 49411/66. Heading B1R. Combustion gases from fuel-burning furnaces are purified by introducing into a hot zone of a furnace an additive capable of reacting with sulfur oxides, the combustion gases the additive and reaction products thereto being withdrawn and scrubbed with water. The additive may be alkali metal oxides, alkaline earth metal oxides or substances which produce alkaline earth metal oxides by thermal decomposite. Preferred additives are dolmite and/or limestone. When a ground solid fuel e.g. coal is being turned in the furnace an additive, e.g. dolmite, may be added to the coal before it is ground. Purified combustion gases leaving the scrubber may be related after leaving the scrubber by heat-exchange with gases entering the scrubber before discharge to the atmosphere.
