Abstract

878,568. Fluid-pressure brakes. COMPAGNIE DES FREINS ET SIGNAUX WESTINGHOUSE. May 30, 1958 [June 1, 1957] No. 17299/58. Class 103 (1). A variable load vehicle braking apparatus comprises in a casing 1, a piston 2 movable by increases in pressure from control pipe 5, to first close the exhaust connection between brake cylinder pipe CF and atmospheric bore 3 and then open valve 4 to connect the auxiliary reservoir pipe RA to the brake cylinder; the brake cylinder pressure acts below a diaphragm piston 11 to move it upwardly against atmospheric pressure to engage rocker arm 6 through the piston follower 10 to limit the stroke of piston 2 and hence the brake pressure, the fulcrum 7 of the arm 6 being mounted in a sleeve 8 slidable in a bore 9 by a piston 16 under the action of pressure from the vehicle air suspension system, the piston 16 firstly moving against a spring 19 and then against springs 19 and 20 corresponding to load variations between empty and half-load and between half-load and maximum load respectively. In the event of a breakage in the brake pipe connection, the chamber above a piston 13 is vented and the piston-rod moves piston 2 upwards to open valve 4 and apply the brakes.
