Abstract

The invention comprises pyridazine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0878259/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C3 alkyl radical, X is a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal or a C1-C4 alkyl radical, Hal is a hydrogen atom and n equals the valency of X, and their manufacture by reacting a 3,6-dihalo pyridazine with a compound of the general formula <FORM:0878259/IV (b)/2> wherein M represents an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, X1 is an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or C1-C4 alkyl radical, R is as above defined and m equals the valency of Me and n the valency of X1, whereby one equivalent of metal halide is split off; the free acid may be obtained by acidification of the salt. The reaction may be effected in water or other polar solvent and the O-alkali compound of the hydroxy-acid reactant may be formed in situ. Examples describe the production of (1) 3-chloro and 3-bromo pyridazine-6-oxyacetic acids and their sodium salts and d,l-a -(3-chloro pyridazine-6-oxypropionic acid and its sodium salt. The products may be used as herbicides (see Group VI).ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise pyridazine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0878259/VI/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a C1-3 alkyl radical, X is a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal or a C1-4 alkyl radical, Hal is a halogen atom and n equals the valency of X, and a carrier or another weed control agent such as a halogenated phenoxy acetic acid especially 2 : 4-dichlorphenoxy acetic acid. Named pyridazine derivatives are the 3-chloro and 3-bromo pyridazine-6-oxyacetic acid compounds and d,1-a -3-chloro pyridazine-6-oxy-propionic acid.
