Abstract
The invention comprises bis-maleamic acid of the formula HOOC-CH : CH-CO-NH : NH-CO-CH : CH-COOH and salts and functional derivatives thereof. The acid may be prepared by reacting together maleic anhydride, a weak acid such as acetic and hydrazine, hydrazine hydrate or a salt of hydrazine, at a temperature below about 100 DEG C. The hydrazine salt is preferably derived from a weak organic acid. The functional derivatives of bis-maleamic acid may be prepared by any methods known in the art for the preparation of functional derivatives of dicarboxylic acids. Specified functional derivatives are esters and amides of bis-maleamic acid. Specified salts are alkali metal, ammonium and diethanolamine salts.ALSO:A plant growth regulant composition comprises bis maleamic acid or salts or functional derivatives thereof together with a solvent and/or a carrier and/or a wetting or dispersing agent. Specified functional derivatives and salts are amides and esters and alkali metal and ammonium salts of bis maleamic acid respectively. The solvent may be water or an organic liquid, and diethanolamine may be employed to solubilize suspensions of bis maleamic acid in water. Specified solid carriers are clays, sands, talc, mica and fertilizers. Specified wetting agents are aliphatic or aromatic sulphates or sulphonates such as cetyl potassium sulphate, sodium oleyl sulphate, sulphonated ethers, esters and amides, isopropyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate and dioctyl sulphosuccinate; amines, amides and quaternary ammonium compounds such as oleyl amide, trimethyl cetyl ammonium iodide and cetyl pyridinium bromide; and ethers or esters of polyhydric alcohols or polyhydric compounds. The above described compositions may be used to retard the growth of grass.ALSO:A phytocide composition comprises bis maleamic acid or salts or functional derivatives thereof together with a solvent and/or a carrier and/or a wetting or dispersing agent.
