Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula R4-N=C(SR1)-NR2R3, where R1 is alkyl or aralkyl, R2 and R3 are alkyl, and R4 is halophenyl, and acid addition salts thereof; and their preparation by reacting R4NH.CS.NR2 R3 with R1Z where Z is halogen, to obtain the hydrohalide salt, and if desired hydrolysing to the free isothiourea. Other salts are obtained by reacting the isothiourea with an acid. Examples prepare (1) S-methyl N-chlorophenyl N1, N1-dimethyl isothiouronium iodide, (2) S-methyl N-chlorophenyl N1, N1-dimethyl isothiourea, (3) S-benzyl N-chlorophenyl N1,N1-dimethyl isothiouronium bromide, and (4) S-benzyl N-chlorophenyl N1,N1-dimethyl isothiourea. The compounds of the invention are agricultural chemicals (see Division A5). According to the Provisional Specification R1, R2 and R3 may be alkyl, aryl or aralkyl.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions contain as active ingredient a compound R4-N = C(SR1)-NR2R3, where R1 is alkyl or aralkyl, R2 and R3 are alkyl, and R4 is halophenyl, or an acid addition salt thereof e.g. the halide, nitrate, sulphate or acetate (see Division C2). Suitable solid carriers are clays, sands, talc, mica, fertilisers and wetting agents; or the compositions may be aqueous solutions of the salts, with or without wetting or dispersing agents, organic solvents or stickers; or organic solutions, e.g. in high-boiling aromatic hydrocarbons containing an emulsifying agent. Suitable wetting agents are listed. The compositions may also contain other herbicides, e.g. 2 - methyl - 4 - chlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2,4 - dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and p-chlorophenyl dimethyl urea. According to the Provisional Specification R1, R2 and R3 may be alkyl, aryl or aralkyl.
