Abstract
The invention comprises new water-soluble quaternary ammonium salts of the general formula: <FORM:0774679/IV(b)/1> in which X- is the anion of an acid giving a water-soluble compound with the quaternary ammonium cation. They may be prepared by reacting dodecyl - di - (b - hydroxyethyl)-amine with a benzylating agent of the formula: <FORM:0774679/IV(b)/2> Alternatively they may be prepared by reacting dodecyl - benzyl - b - hydroxy ethyl amine with a compound of formula X.CH2CH2Oh. Suitable benzylating agents are, for example, benzyl esters of inorganic acids such as benzyl nitrate and benzyl halides. In the example dodecyl-di-(b -hydroxyethyl)-amine is heated with benzyl chloride to give the corresponding quaternary ammonium salt. The dodecyl-di-(b -hydroxyethyl) amine used as starting material may be obtained by introducing two mols. of ethylene oxide into one mol. of dodecylamine at about 150-170 DEG C., or by condensing dodecyl bromide with diethanolamine.ALSO:Water-soluble quaternary ammonium salts of the general formula <FORM:0774679/VI/1> in which X is the anion of an acid giving a water-soluble compound with the quaternary ammonium anion may be used alone, in solution in hard water, or with other liquid or solid diluents as bactericides and/or fungicides. X may be, for example, a nitrate, chloride or bromide radical.
