Abstract

Waxes such as beeswax, paraffin wax, montan wax and chlorinated mineral waxes may be used as carriers in herbicidal compositions in which the active ingredient is of formula <FORM:1022750/C4-C5/1> or a tautomer or salt thereof, R being a 2,6-dihalophenyl group and R1 being hydrogen or C1- 10 alkyl (see Division C2).ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1022750/C2/1> or tautomers and salts thereof, R being a 2,6-dihalophenyl group and R1 being hydrogen or C1-10 alkyl; production of the acids (R1 = H) by reacting a 2,6-dihalo-thiobenzamide with maleic acid or anhydride or 2-bromosuccinimide; production of salts of the esters by esterifying the acids with a C1- 10 alkanol in the presence of an acid; and production of the free esters by treating the salts thereof with water or an alkali. Preferably R is 2,6-dichlorophenyl. Specified acids are HCl, HBr, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4 and acetic, glycollic, lactic, succinic, citric, salicylic, methanesulphonic, ethanesulphonic, benzenesulphonic and p-toluenesulphonic acids, and monomethyl sulphuric acid. The compounds are herbicides (see Division A5).ALSO:Superphosphates may be used as carriers in herbicidal compositions in which the active ingredient is of formula <FORM:1022750/C1/1> or a tautomer or salt thereof, R being a 2,6-dihalophenyl group and R1 being hydrogen or C1- 10 alkyl (see Division C2).ALSO:The invention comprises herbicidal composition containing as active ingredient a compound of formula <FORM:1022750/A5-A6/1> where R is 2, 6-dihalophenyl and R1 is hydrogen or C1-10 alkyl, and tautomers and salts thereof (see Division C2); a method of controlling or eradicating weeds from areas which comprises applying to the areas a compound as defined above or a composition containing such a compound; and a method for improving crop yields which comprises applying to the crop area a compound or composition as defined above. Specified carriers are silicates, clays, hydrated silicon oxides, carbon, sulphur, natural and synthetic resins, solid polychlorophenols, bitumen, asphaltite, waxes, solid fertilisers, water, alcohols, ketones, ethers, acromatic hydrocarbons, petroleum fractions, and chlorinated hydrocarbons; surface-active agents, gelatin, glue, casein, gums, polyvinyl alcohol, sodium polyphosphates, cellulose ethers, EDTA, other herbicides or pesticides and non-volatile oils may also be present in the compositions, which may be in the form of wettable powders, dusts, granules, solutions, emulsifiable concentrates or emulsions.
