Abstract

An emulsion concentrate for pest control comprises at least 5 per cent by weight of compounds of the general formula R1-(R2)CH-CX3, X being chlorine or bromine, and R1 and R2 being cyclic radicals linked by carbon atoms and without salt forming groups, together with at least one crystallization inhibitor which is a non-volatile, neutral, organic liquid of an oily consistency, the ratio of the total amount of crystallization inhibitor to the amount of the above defined compounds being from 2:1 to 4:1. Other insecticides or fungicides may be added. Specified crystallization inhibitors are the esters of glycol ether, adipic acid and phthalic acid, butyrophenone, laurophenone, dimethyl-laurophenone, lauroyl-naphthalene, stearoyl-tetralin, paraffin oil, spindle oil, pine oil and tricresyl phosphate. The emulsions may be used to impregnate permeable materials or objects, such as wool in any worked up form, hair, feathers, furs, body or bed linen, curtains and lampshades. According to examples, (1) D.D.T. is dissolved with heating in phthalic acid butyl ester and xylene, sulphonated castor oil is added, and the product is stirred into water to produce an emulsion; (2) D.D.T., trichloromethyl-3:31 4:47- tetramethyl-diphenylmethane and dimethyl lanrophenone are dissolved in a mixture of xylene and sulphonated castor oil, the product being emulsified with water to produce a product with which wool in its worked up form or feathers are treated by immersion; (3) D.D.T. and allyl o-chlorobenzoic acid allyl ester or other additional insecticide such as pyrethium or rotenone are dissolved in phthalic acid ethyl ester, and xylene and dimethyl-dodecyl-aniline-methosulphate are added, the product being emulsified with water; (4) D.D.T. and dimethyl laurophenone are dissolved by heating in xylene and sulphonated castor oil, the solution being emulsified with water; (5) trichloromethyl-4:41-dimethyl-diphenylmethane and paraffin oil are dissolved with heating in xylene and incorporated in a potash soap, soda soap, sodium salts of alkoxyfatty acids of higher alkyl radicals (C4-C9), sulphated aliphatic alcohols, -dimethyl-aminododecyltoluene-methosulphate, dimethyl-aminoacetic acid-dodecylamide-chloromethylate, or dimethyl-dodecylamino-chlorobenzylate, the product being emulsified with water. The insecticidal compounds in the examples may be replaced by trichloromethyl-4: 41-diethyl diphenyl-methane, trichloromethyl-4-chloro-31:41 - dimethyldiphenylmethane, trichloromethyl-B : B-dinaphthylmethane, trichloromethyl-4-chloro-41-ethyl-diphenylmethane, trichloromethyl 4:41-dichloro-3:31-dimethyl-diphenylmethane and tribromo-methyl-4:41- dichloro-diphenyl-methane. Specifications 572,998, 578,669 and 590,826, [Group VIII], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the inclusion of thianthrene and dimethyl-thianthrene as substances acting both as insecticides and crystallization inhibitors. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
