Abstract

1453443 Biocides IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Oct 1974 [23 Oct 1973] 49161/73-Heading A5B A biocidal, herbicidal, fungicidal or pesticidal composition comprises the active material, acetic acid, one or more cationic surface-active agents and a condensate of one to four molar proportions of ethylene oxide with a C 7 -C 15 . straight chain or slightly branched (i.e. not containing more than one tertiary carbon atom) aliphatic alcohol. The active material may contain a herbicidal 4, 4'-bipyridilium cation of formula: wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> may be the same or different and stand for C 1 -C 4 alkyl radicals which may be substituted by hydroxyl, halogen, carboxyl, alkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl, carbamyl or N-substituted carbamyl groups. Many compounds are specified. Other active compounds comprise the 1, 1'-ethylene-2, 2'- bipyridilium salts such as the dichloride or dibromide or lower alkyl (e.g. methyl) substituted derivatives of these compounds. Cationic surface active agents include the alkyl trimethylammonium halides, alkyl benzyldimethylammonium halides, alkyl pyridinium halides, alkyl quinolinium halides, alkyl imidazolinium halides and alkyl morpholinium halides. The aqueous compositions of the invention may be applied to foliage (couch grass or barley) textiles, animal hides, oiled or greasy metals, plastics, soiled glass and ceramics.
