A straddle loader comprises an open bottom body frame 10 mounted on rear wheels 46 and having a means of attachment to a towing vehicle 18, tracks 26, 28 interconnecting the body rails 36, dollies 94, 98 mounted on the tracks and each rigidly secured to the upper member 102 of a telescopic leg, load engaging shoes 52 secured between pairs of lower leg members 148, a pair of rams 60 adapted to move the shoes laterally of the loader and a ram and pulley mechanism 56 adapted to contract the legs simultaneously and thereby raise the shoes. Each dolly is provided with rollers 114 and trunnions 106 which engage the rails 64 of the associated track during parallel movement of the legs by means of rams 60, but, when chains 124 are connected between body frame members 20 and points on the dollies above trunnions 106, contraction of the rams 60 tilts the dollies about the trunnions and thereby swings the shoes 52 together. The ram and pulley mechanism 56 has an hydraulic ram 58 carrying a cross-head 86 provided with pulleys 88 (Fig. 4), which co-operate with cables 90, 96 passing from anchorages 92 over pulleys 70 carried by stationary members 66, 68 over pulleys 116 on the dollies, under pulleys 120 mounted on the lower leg members 148, and over further pulleys 118 on the dollies to anchorages on frame members 36. The rams 58, 60 are double acting and are controlled by an hydraulic circuit (Fig. 13, not shown) which has means for locking the rams in any position of adjustment. Detachable pins 170 (Fig. 3) are insertable in holes 168 in the legs to hold them in their adjusted positions.
