Abstract

1:4-Dibromobutane is prepared by a continuous process which comprises introducing tetrahydrofuran into the top of a vertical reaction column and anhydrous hydrobromic acid into the bottom of the column so as to react with each other under normal pressure in the vapour phase and in the absence of either a catalyst or a dehydrating agent, the column being filled with an inert finely-divided material, collecting the resultant reaction products at the bottom of the column, separating 1:4-dibromobutane, unreacted tetrahydrofuran and water, recycling the tetrahydrofuran and the excess hydrobromic acid which passes out at the top of the column and separating the 1:4-dibromobutane from the reaction products. An apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
