Abstract

876,330. Valves. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 26, 1959 [Feb. 4, 1958], No. 3692/58. Class 135. A butterfly valve comprises a tubular body 1 housing a butterfly closure member 2, 3 pivotally mounted at 6, two flexible annular sealing diaphragms 5 of frusto-conical form inside the body and positioned on opposite sides of the pivotal axis of the closure member, each diaphragm being sealed at its edges to removable plates 7, 8 sealed to the body at 16 to form an annular space 13 bounded by the plates and the diaphragm, two sealing rings 4 located in grooves in the periphery of the closure member for respective co-operation with the diaphragms, and passageways 12 communicating with the spaces 13 so as to permit the sealing together of the diaphragms and their respective sealing rings by fluid pressure. An annular space 11 enclosed by the diaphragms between the periphery of the valve member 2, 3 and the body 1 in the closed position is connected by a passage 10 with the outside of the body whereby leakage may be detected.
