Abstract

The rate at which Hevea brasiliensis latex or a concentrate thereof matures, i.e. attains the mechanical stability suitable for industrial use, is increased by maintaining the latex in aerobic condition and adding, preferably before the aerobic treatment, a substance which interacts with the peroxidic groups formed in the rubber by the aerobic treatment and so counteracts oxidative degradation. The aerobic condition may be obtained by agitation of the latex in the presence of a controlled amount of air or oxygen. The added substances are exemplified by aromatic diamines such as benzidine, the phenylenediamines and polyalkylene polyamines, e.g. tetraethylene pentamine, which favour development of cross-linking in peroxidized olefines, dior poly-hydric phenols such as di-tert. butyl hydroquinone which inhibit chain-scission in peroxidized olefines, and sequestering agents such as ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid.
