Abstract

A rubber composition is bonded to a metal surface by adding to the rubber a minor proportion, e.g. 5-25%, by weight, of an epoxidized rubbery polymer and vulcanizing whilst in contact with the metal. The epoxidized rubbery polymers are those obtained by treating a rubbery polymer with a per-acid, e.g. perbenzoic acid, monoperphthalic acid or performic acid, or with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst. Suitable epoxidized polymers include the epoxidation products of natural rubber, polystyrene, polyisoprene, polybutadiene, polybutadiene-styrene or the halogenated or sulpho-chlorinated derivatives of the above polymers and other polymers such as polyethylene and ethylene-propylene terpolymers. Rubber compositions include natural rubber or synthetic rubbers such as polyisoprene, polybutadiene and polybutadiene-styrene, together with the usual reinforcing fillers and vulcanizing agents. Said compositions with additives of epoxidized polymers are bonded directly, without priming, to brass, aluminium, iron or steel. Examples demonstrate the improved bonding obtained by the use of epoxidized polymers as additions, such additions being in amounts that give an epoxide oxygen content of 0.1 to 1.3% by weight of the total composition. The invention may be applied to the making of tyres with steel cord inserts, driving belts, pressure rollers, torsion elastic springs and reinforced hoses.ALSO:A rubber composition is bonded to a metal surface by adding to the rubber a minor proportion, e.g. 5-25%, by weight, of an epoxidised rubbery polymer and vulcanizing whilst in contact with the metal.
