Abstract

A vulcanization adhesive for bonding olefin copolymers to a support comprises a chlorsulphonated ethylene/a -olefin copolymer, an organic peroxide and sulphur. The a -olefin is preferably propylene or 1-butene. The adhesive may also contain natural rubber or a phenolaldehyde or colophony-based resin. In an Example (2) a 50: 50 ethylene-propylene copolymer of mol. wgt. about 150,000 is dissolved in carbon tetrachloride and a mixed chlorine-sulphur dioxide current is passed through it under active radiation to form a product containing about 15% chlorine and 1.5% sulphur. Typical adhesive compositions containing 100 parts of such a product also contain natural rubber, 20 parts (an optional ingredient), silica, 50 parts, titanium dioxide, 20 parts carbon black (optional) 50 parts, magnesium oxide, 2 parts, diphenylguanidine, 1 part, tert. butyl amyl peroxide, 3 parts, and sulphur, 2.8 parts. A similar composition, described for comparison and having no peroxide or sulphur, contains as additional ingredients hydrogenated abeiteric acid, 5 parts, phthalic acid, 2 parts, thiuram M, 1 part, and tetrone A, 1 part. Typical olefin copolymer mixes bondable to supports by the above adhesive compositions comprise ethylene/propylene or ethylene/butene copolymer, 100 parts, carbon black, 50 parts, sulphur, 0.3 parts, tert. butyl cumyl peroxide, 2 parts, with or without diphenyl guanidine, 1 part, and magnesium oxide, 2 parts. Specifications 856,736, 856,737 and 861,542 are referred to.
