Abstract

A liquid or readily fusible curable addition polymer of butadiene having 100% terminal carboxy groups is prepared by initiating the polymerization of butadiene with a dissociable bi-functional initiator in the presence of a dissociable bi-functional chain transfer agent, both of which on dissociation produce two free radicals each having a carboxy group. The preferred initiator is an omega-omega-azobis-omega cyano-dicarboxylic acid e.g., 4-41-azobis-4-cyanopentanoic acid while specified chain transfer agents are dithiodibutyric acid, dithiodipropanoic acid, and dithiodihexanoic acid. The polymerization may take place in a mixture of methanol and water. The product may be cured using a difunctional epoxide curing agent, ethylene amino stearinated substituted methane or tris-2-methylaziridino-phosphine oxide.
