Abstract

Elongated articles consisting predominantly of highly crystalline polypropylene are uniformly dyed by mixing with the polypropylene at least one dye which is stable at the melting point of the polypropylene and does not have a degrading action thereon, melting or dissolving the polypropylene and subsequently forming the elongated articles. The elongated articles, e.g. yarns, fibres, films and tapes, may be made by extrusion or spinning. The dye may be added to powdered polypropylene which is then melted, or added to molten polypropylene, or the dye and the polypropylene may be dissolved, either in a common solvent or in a mixture of two or more solvents, at least one of which is a solvent for the dye. Anthraquinone, indigo, thioindigo phthalocyanine and azo dyes are stated to be suitable and specific dyes mentioned include Romanthrene yellow GCN, Indanthren Scarlet ZG, Durindone Scarlet YP, Polymer Blue GS and Oracet B Blue.
