Abstract

In the colouring of nitrocellulose lacquers, the spin dyeing of regenerated cellulose, cellulose ether, cellulose ester and synthetic polymer fibres and in the colouring of plastics, use is made of dyestuffs having the general formulae: <FORM:0859288/IV(a)/1> <FORM:0859288/IV(a)/2> wherein R represents the radical of an ortho-or peri-arylene, R1 represents hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy and R2 and R3 each represent hydrogen or halogen. In an example, a nitrocellulose lacquer is coloured with 2% by weight of a reddish violet pigment dyestuff obtained by reacting tetrachloro-perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylic anhydride with 1, 2-diamino-4-methylbenze. In another example, 3 parts parts of violet pigment dyestuff, obtained by reacting perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylic anhydride with 1, 2-diaminobenzene, are mixed with 500 parts of nylon 66 and the mixture is melt spun in a nitrogen atmosphere at about 285 DEG C. In a third example, 1 part of a violet pigment dyestuff, prepared by reating perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylic anhydride with 1, 2-diamino-4-methylbenzene, is compounded in a roller mill with 4 parts of water and a small proportion of sodium dinaphthylmethane dissulphonate to form a paste which is mixed with 1170 parts of a viscose containing 8,5% of alpha cellulose, and the mixture is wet-spun to form violet regenerated cellulose filaments. In an example of the colouring of a polyvinyl chloride composition 0,1 part of a pigment dyestuff, produced by reacting perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylic anhydride with 1, 2-diaminobenzene, is pasted with 1 part of dioctyl phthalate, the paste is incorporated in a mixture of 60 parts of polyvinyl chloride and 40 parts of dioctylphthalate, and the mixture is gelatinized on a roller mill at 140-150 DEG C. and pressed between polished plates at 140 DEG C. to form a violet coloured sheet. In other examples the dyestuffs are incorporated in polystyrene and polyethylene moulding powders respectively. When used with polyvinyl chloride the dyestuff preferably contains at least two halogen atoms. Several dyestuffs suitable for use with polyvinyl chloride are tabulated, including bromo- and chloro-substituted compounds obtained by using halogensubstituted starting material or by halogenating the coupled dye.
