Abstract

The invention comprises halogeno-anthraquinone-bis-thiachromones wherein each of the sulphur atoms is attached to an alpha-position of the anthraquinone nucleus and the halogen content is at least 2 atoms per molecule, and particularly those of the formulae <FORM:0956014/C3/1> <FORM:0956014/C3/2> wherein W and Y are halogen atoms and X and Z are hydrogen or halogen atoms. Pigments of formulae I and II are made by cyclizing a compound of the formula <FORM:0956014/C3/3> or a compound of the formula <FORM:0956014/C3/4> where the two sulphur atoms are in 1:5- or 1:8-positions and each carboxyl group is adjacent to a sulphur atom. Pigments which may contain more than four halogens and/or may contain halogens in non-terminal rings of the nucleus may be made by halogenating an anthraquinone - [1,2 - b; 5,6 - b1] - or - [1,2 - b; 8,7 - b1] - bis - thiachromone which may already contain halogen, in sulphuric acid or an aluminium chloride melt. The pigments colour printing inks, paints, lacquers and stoving, enamels, rubber, cellulose acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyesters, polyamides and viscose in red shades.
