Abstract

874,789. Lifting devices for handling articles. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 9, 1959 [Nov. 20, 1958], No. 37452/58. Class 78 (4). [Also in Group XL (a)] A grab for lifting fuel elements from channels in the core of a steam-cooled nuclear reactor comprises a cylindrical body 1 receiving a piston 3 supported by coaxial flexible tubes 10, 11 the piston being biased by a spring 7 against a stop ring 4 secured to the body 1 and the body 1 having a continuous bleed orifice 18. A shaft 15 attached to the piston 3 has a central bore 21 communicating with the tube 10 and carries pairs of lugs 14 having pivot pins 13 supporting three equispaced claws 12, slots 16<SP>1</SP> in the claws co-operating with pins 16 carried by lugs 17 integral with the body 1. The lower end of the shaft 15, Fig. 3, contains a tapering probe 24 biased against a valve seat 23 by a spring 26, and the lower end slidably supports a locating nose 29 biased by a spring 31 against a stop washer 28 secured to the shaft end. The tubes 10, 11 are wound over a hoist drum W, the tube 10 and annular space 11<SP>1</SP> between the tubes 10, 11 being connected to a steam condenser C. When using the grab to remove a fuel element, a valve 33 is opened to create a partial vacuum in the space enclosed by the piston and cylinder 3, 1 whereby the body 1 moves upwards due to the ambient steam pressure the lugs 17 moving the claws 12 to the open position and the spring 7 being compressed. The grab is lowered so that the end of the fuel element 29<SP>1</SP> is received -within the nose 29, further downward movement causing movement of the nose 29 on the shaft 15 and the probe 24 is lifted off its seat 23 by the element 291. A steam flow path is thus established through the bore 21 and tube 10 the steam pressure being indicated by an instrument 34 to provide a warning signal to the grab operator. The steam bleeding through orifice 18 is continuously evacuated to the condenser C. The valve 33 is now shut so that the pressure within the piston and cylinder builds up and eventually the spring 7 moves the body 1 downwards relatively to the piston and the claws 12 close upon the element 29<SP>1</SP>. A passageway 19 leading to the exterior of the body 1 is then in alignment with a passageway 20 leading to the bore 21 whereby a further warning is given to the operator by the instrument 34.
