Abstract

1315446 Testing safety valves UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 14 April 1972 [28 April 1971] 12016/71 Heading G1S A safety valve 2 connected to a pressurized vessel 1 has its vertically movable stem 8 guided by a spider 9 and held down by a weighted lever 12 pivoted at 13 to a casing 5 and acting down on the spindle thro' toggle links 11. In operation to test the valve it is weighted down and the pressure in the vessel 1 raised to the value the valve should release at. The load on the valve is then suddenly removed by a slidable rod 20 being forced pneumatically by a cylinder 22 against and breaking the toggle linkage, and the release travel of the valve is recorded on a surface 18 by a stylus 16 carried by a ring 10 on the valve stem. The pneumatic control fluid to operate the cylinder 22 and rod 20 may be provided by the vessel 1.
