824,847. Pneumatic linear-dimension gauging. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 31, 1957 [March 2, 1956], No. 6636/56. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A pneumatic linear dimension gauge comprises a conduit 1 provided with a nozzle 4, a diaphragm stack or cylindrical bellows 3 connected in or to the conduit 1, one end of the stack or bellows being fixed, and the other end movable, the nozzle 4 and the movable end being so connected that movement of one causes movement of the other, a restriction 2 in the conduit 1 and a side arm 6 on the conduit 1 connected to a pressure gauge or recorder 5. In operation, if the surface 7 approaches the nozzle 4, the pressure in bellows 3 rises, thus moving the nozzle 4 further away from the surface 7, the reverse being the case if the surface 7 moves away frorn the nozzle 4. Other embodiments are also described. These include mounting the nozzle 4 on a lever connected to the movable end of the stack or bellows 3, and so being able to vary the ratio between the movement of the nozzle and the movement of the stack; a mechanical feeler acting directly on the surface 7 and moving a valve in front of the nozzle 4; means for moving the nozzle parallel to itself or radially ; and means for zeroizing the apparatus.
