Abstract
635,245. Automatic control systems for aircraft. ANDREWS, W. A. June 18, 1947, No. 16139. [Class 38 (iv)], The speed of an aircraft, measured by a pitot-tube, is prevented from exceeding a limiting value by control of the propulsive thrust of the power unit. As shown, Fig. 1, the pressures in tubes 10a, 10b are dependent on the aircraft speed and static atmospheric pressure respectively. The evacuated capsules 12, 17 are subjected to the pressures in 10a, 10b and the potentiometer arms 13, 18 are positioned accordingly to produce an input signal to the amplifier 26 the output of which is zero at indicated air speeds below the maximum value. In a modification (not shown) the control signal may correspond with the mach number above a limiting value. The output of 26 is applied to control the fuel supply to the injectors 41, Fig. 4 ; the solenoid controlled valve 50 positions the swash-plate 42 and reduces the stroke of the fuel pump 37 and the fuel delivery at the injectors in accordance with the output of 26. In addition, when the amplifier output rises above zero, the solenoid 55 closes the switch 54, and if the fuel pressure is low enough to permit switch 54 to close then the valve 53 is set to allow the pump 61 to supply the hydraulic ram and drag flaps 34 are moved increasing the aircraft air resistance. In a further modification (not shown) the engine thrust is lowered by a reduction of the area of the jet pipe nozzle.
