Abstract

874,383. Air filters. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. May 12, 1960 [May 27, 1959], No. 18057/59. Addition to 848,129. Class 8(2). An air filter comprises a filter element formed from a strip of sheet material e.g., resin impregnated paper 1 Fig. 2, folded about a series of transverse lines to form accordian pleats 4 having their ends sealed separately from those of an adjacent pleat so as to form a panel 6 of pockets 5 having co-planar open ends which are adhesively sealed at 2 to a support sheet 7 provided with an opening 10,Fig. 4, (not shown), opposite to and in communication with said pockets 5, and with the air intake of an I.C. engine on which the support sheet 7 is mounted. The rectangular panel has two opposite sides closed by upturned ends 14, 15 Fig. 3, of the support plate 7 which are sealed to downturned ends 17, 18 of a cover plate 16, the remaining two sides being left open. The central portion of the support plate has rectangular and circular recessed portions 8, 9 which form a silencing chamber.
