A self-contained air filter cartridge, e.g. for mounting in the air inlet duct of an air-conditioning system, comprises a frame in which are mounted a plurality of support strips 10 each folded into a longitudinal V-shape and having a number of apertures 11, the strips 10 being positioned laterally adjacent each other and having a filter sheet 25 secured to one surface. As shown in Fig. 2, the strips 10 are formed so as to comprise a pair of longitudinal edge ribs 12,13 and a longitudinal central rib 14 which are joined by lateral ribs 15. The central rib 14 has longitudinal cuts 17 between which it is cut-scored to facilitate its longitudinal folding. Stripes of glue are applied as shown by the broken lines 22 along and intermediate the lateral ribs 15 for securing the filter sheet 25, which sheet is secured to the insides of the V- shaped folds. Billowing of the sheet 25 through the apertures 11 is prevented by this arrangement. The sheet 25 is applied to the strips 10 before these are folded and in order to facilitate this folding and to avoid stretching of the sheet 25 where it overlaps adjacent strips 10, these are provided with protuberances 16 on their edge ribs 12,13 at locations adjacent each lateral rib 15. The edge ribs 12,13 are therefore slightly separated and the sheet 25 stretched at only a few points which does not seriously inhibit the folding of the strips nor cause appreciable damage to the filtering material. A tape is glued to each end of the assembled strips so as to maintain their folded configuration and when these are placed within the frame the tapes are glued to one pair of opposite sides of the frame, the other pair of opposite sides being glued and stapled to the end strips of the assembly. Suitable materials for the strips and the frame are chipboard, paperboard, cardboard and certain plastic materials which can be cutscored and folded.
