Abstract

873,422. Miners' electric lamps. KOEHLER MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 15, 1960, No. 5367/60. Class 75(4). In a miner's electric lamp of the type having a headpiece containing a tubular lamp socket, a reflector slidably mounted thereon by means of a hub portion having a toothed rack so that the reflector can be moved for focusing by an external operating means, the operating means is also coupled to a rotatable switch member for closing the circuit to the lamp filament from an electric conductor means connected to a source of electric current. The lamp may have two filaments which are alternatively connected in different positions of the switch member. The headpiece may be attached e.g. to the miner's cap and the battery secured e.g. around his waist. In the form shown, the bulb 20, Fig. 2, has filaments 20a, 20b connected respectively to contacts 22, 24 and is mounted in a sleeve on which slides a tubular member 30 carrying the reflector 26. A rack 34 on the member 30 engages a pinion 36 on a shaft 38 connected to an external operating knob so that the reflector can be moved to bring either filament into focus. The contacts 22, 24, Fig. 4, have elongated ends which co-operate with an arm 42 mounted on the shaft 38 to close the circuit of the appropriate filament according to the position of the reflector, the elongated ends allowing a period of travel of the reftector while the filament is in circuit so that the spread of the light beam can be varied.
