Abstract
873,194. Making electrical components; welding by pressure. MULLARD Ltd. March 9, 1960, No. 8326/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In making a field straightener assembly for a travelling-wave tube, an interleaved series of clean oxide-free copper and ferromagnetic magnetically soft alloy annular discs is arranged on a cylinderical mandrel and retained thereon between end-stops, the mandrel and discs are heated to 900-1060‹ C. in a reducing atmosphere, the mandrel and discs are allowed to cool and the assembly of cohered discs is removed from the mandrel. The larger oxide-free copper discs A and smaller clean ferromagnetic magnetically soft alloy discs B are clamped on a steel bolt C between the bolt-head E and a bush F and the assembly is heated in hydrogen to about 1000‹ C. so that the rings expand and increase the pressure between them to effect bonding of the rings believed to be by diffusion of the copper into the ferromagnetic discs. The assembly is slowly cooled, the ring assembly is removed and the outer peripheries of the copper rings are trimmed in a lathe and lie on a cylindrical surface.
