Abstract
The iron content of sodium borate contaminated with iron is lowered by adding ferric hydroxide to a solution of the sodium borate, allowing the ferric hydroxide to settle whereby the iron is carried down with it, filtering, and crystallizing sodium borate from the solution. The ferric hydroxide is prepared by adding NaOH, LiOH, KOH or NH4OH, to a solution or slurry of a ferric salt, e.g. ferric sulphate, in water until a pH of 9 or higher is reached, and the resulting slurry of ferric hydroxide is added to the sodium borate solution. The sodium borate solution may be obtained by leaching a sodium borate ore with water or with a sodium borate mother liquor, and the ferric hydroxide may be added before or after gargue is removed.
