Abstract

1429490 Sulphurous acid leaching of oxidic copper materials ANGLO AMERICAN CORP OF SOUTH AFRICA Ltd 9 Oct 1973 47064/73 Heading C1A Copper values are leached from oxidic coppercontaining materials by a process which includes the steps of contacting the material, preferably finely ground, with a sulphurous acid leach solution, preferably maintained at a pH in the range 1À3-1À8 during leaching, for a time sufficient to cause a desired amount of the copper values to be leached from the material thereby producing a copper-rich leach solution and residual solids and separating the residual solids from the copper-rich solution characterized in that the leach solution is maintained at a temperature below 25‹ C., preferably from 10-15‹ C., substantially to prevent precipitation of the copper in the form of Chevreal salt before the expiry of the leaching time.
