Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of formula:-<FORM:0872685/IV(c)/1> where R and R1 are residues of the same or different components, which contain X a to the azo groups, and X is a metallizable group or a group convertible thereto during metallization. The dyes are made by coupling appropriate diazo compounds with 5, 51-dihydroxy-2, 21-azonaphthalene-7, 71-disulphonic acid and metalizing if desired. The dyes may also be made by coupling the diazo compound, in an alkaline medium, with 2-amino-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid, if desired converting the amino-azo compound thus obtained into its metal complex, diazotizing the amino-azo compound, or its metal complex, in acetic acid and converting 2 mols of the same of different diazo compounds obtained in this manner, by treatment with sulphurous acid salts into a symmetrical or asymmetrical bis- or poly-azo dye. In both processes metallization may be effected at any stage or as an after-treatment on the fibre. 5, 51-Dihydroxy-2, 21-azonaphthalene-7, 71-disulphonic acid is made by treating 2-diazo-5-benzensulphonylnaphthol-7-sulphonic acid with sulphurous acid salts and hydrolysing the sulphonyl radical. Indicated as values for X are hydroxyl, carboxy, cyclic imino, alkoxy, halogen, sulphonic acid and hydrogen. The diazo components may contain substituents such as sulphonic and carboxylic acid, nitro, alkyl, halogen, sulphone, sulphonamide and azo groups. Representative of specified diazo components are aniline, 2-chloroaniline-4-sulphonic acid, salicylic acid, 1-amino-4-nitro-2-phenol, 2-naphthylamine-4, 8-disulphonic acid, 5-methyl-4-aminobenztriazole and 2-methyl- 4-amino- 5-methoxy-1, 11-azobenzene- 41-sulphonic acid. Copper and nickel are preferred metals for complex formation. The dyes are especially useful for native and regenerated cellulose. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and the use of copper complexes in colouring cotton in red, blue, green and grey shades.
