Abstract

Copper complex compounds of azo dyes are made by combining two molecules of a copper complex compound of an o : o<1>-dihydroxymonoazo dye containing a nitro group in p-position to the azo bridge by reducing the two nitro groups with an alkaline reducing agent to the azo or azoxy group. They dye cotton and regenerated cellulose in fast blue to grey shades. In an example, the copper compound of the dye 5-nitro-2-aminophenol --> chromotropic acid is reduced with alkaline grape sugar. Other components specified are 5-nitro-4-chloro-2-aminophenol; 8 - ethoxy - 1 - naphthol-3 : 6-disulphonic acid, 2-naphthol-3 : 6-disulphonic acid and 2-amino-5-naphthol-1 : 7-disulphonic acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also 1-amino-8-naphthol and N-substitution products thereof and 3-aminophenol-4-sulphonic acid as coupling components. Those dyestuffs containing diazotizable amino groups can be diazotized on the fibre and developed. The above described dyestuff containing H acid as component when diazotized on the fibre and coupled with m-phenylenediamine or b -naphthol yields grey and bluish-black shades respectively. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
