Abstract

The invention comprises azo dyes of formula <FORM:0907383/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a monoazo dye radical, R1 is the radical of an azo component having -OH ortho to -N=N-, X is a hydrogen atom or sulphonic acid group and Z is an azo, azoxy, urea, secondary or tertiary triazinylamino, terephthaloylamino or fumaroylamino bridge member and copper complexes thereof. The invention also comprises a process for the production of azo dyes wherein a diazoxide of formula <FORM:0907383/IV (b)/2> wherein one X is a sulphonic acid group and the other hydrogen or a sulphonic acid group are coupled with azo components in o-position to a hydroxy group, the intermediate azo dyes coppered if desired, the 6-nitro group converted into an azo, azoxy, urea, secondary or tertiary triazinylamino, terephthaloylamino or fumaroylamino bridge member, by reductively linking the nitro group to form an azo or azoxy group or by reduction of the nitro group to an amino group which is diazotised and coupled with an azo component or reacted with phosgene, a di- or tri-halotriazine, terephthaloyl or fumaroyl chloride or first with phenyl chloroformate to form the phenylurethane which is then reacted with an aminoazo compound of the same structure to form the urea. The final products are coppered, if desired. The dyes give blue and grey shades on cellulose fibres. In Examples: (1) 2-naphthol-3:6-disulphonic acid is heated in aqueous medium in the presence of calcium oxide with 2-diazo-1-oxide-6-nitronaphthalene-4 : 8-disulphonic acid, the o:o1-dihydroxyazo dye formed is coppered and the copper complex is treated with glucose and sodium hydroxide solution; (2) the dyestuff obtained in the first stage of (1) is treated with sodium sulphide solution and the resultant 6-amino compound is reacted with phosgene to form the urea which is coppered or diazotised and coupled with 2-methoxy-5-methyl-aniline, the aminodisazo dye obtained being diazotised and coupled with 2-naphthol-3:6-disulphonic acid and the triazo dye is coppered.
