Abstract

2-Amino-4-carboxy-5-hydroxyphenoxyacetic acid is made by reducing 5-carboxy-4-hydroxy-2-carboxymethoxy-1, 11-azobenzene-41-sulphonic acid. It is a diazo component for metallisable azo dyes.ALSO:The invention comprises azo dyes which contain at least one grouping of formula <FORM:0901748/IV (b)/1> where <FORM:0901748/IV (b)/2> is the residue of a coupling component, and their metal complexes. They are made by conventional diazotisation and coupling processes. Mono-, dis- and poly-azo dyes may be made. Representative of specified coupling components for monoazo dyes are acetoacetylaminobenzene, 5-acetoacetylamino-2-phenol-1-carboxylic acid, 1-(3-sulphophenyl)-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, resorcinol, 1-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid, 1-amino-7-naphthol and 2,4-dihydroxyquinoline and for dis- and poly-azo dyes are resorcinol, 2,5-dihydroxynaphthalene-7-sulphonic acid, 5,51-dihydroxy-[dinaphthyl-(2)-amino]-disulphonic acid (7,71), [5-hydroxy-7-sulphonapthyl-2(2- or 3)] ureas, 4,41-diaceto-acetylaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid, 1,11-diphenylene-(4,41)- bis-(3-methyl-5- pyrazolene) -3,31-disulphonic acid, condensation products of cyanuric halides with coupling components containing an amino group and azo compounds obtained by diazotising an aryl azo or amino azo compound and coupling in an acid medium with an aminonaphthol sulphonic acid. Products containing an azo group may be diazotised and coupled with appropriate components or reacted with such reagents as cyanuric chloride or phosgene to produce dis- or poly-azo dyes. Metallisation may be effected at the o-hydroxycarboxy or o-carboxymethoxy-o1-hydroxy azo group or at both groups. Metallisation may be performed in substance or on the fibre. Mixed metal complexes may be prepared. Copper, nickel and cobalt chromium complexes are described. The dyes colour animal, vegetable and synthetic fibres and anodically oxidised aluminium. A great many examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use, and the use of their metal complexes, in dyeing wool and cotton in a variety of shades. 5-Carboxy- 4-hydroxy- 3-carboxymethoxy-1-, 11-azobenzene-41-sulphonic acid is prepared by diazotising aniline-4-sulphonic acid and alkaline coupling with 4-carboxy-3-hydroxyphenoxy-acetic acid. On reduction it provides the diazo component for the dyes containing the above grouping.
