Abstract

872,345. Wells. HALL, J. E., and HALL, J. A. May 1, 1959, No. 14981/59. Class 85. A stop collar assembly comprises a collar 22 adapted to be fitted on a well pipe 21 to form a cavity which is arched in longitudinal section, a pair of wedging rings 23 adapted to be mounted within the the cavity and encircling the pipe, and thrust means 25 adapted to be received in the cavity and to urge the rings apart to wedge the collar on the pipe. The rings which comprise a solid core surrounded by a helical coil are split so that they may be mounted on the collar before being fed into the cavity through an aperture 24 (see Fig. 1). The thrust means comprises a helical coil which is held in an expanded condition by a member 26 to permit mounting on the pipe prior to feeding into the cavity through the aperture. An end of the coil 25 is released from the member 26 and is fed into the cavity between the rings by rotating the collar. The collar is locked into position on the pipe by threading studs (not shown) into holes 28a, the studs having tapered ends which wedge between coils of the means 25. In a modification the collar has a cylindrical outer surface permitting the rings and the thrust means to be intially carried on the collar, the means being formed of a number of split rings. In a further modification the rings and means are combined in a single helical coil. The collar may be formed of two parts hinged together and all the rings may also be formed in two parts. Two collar assemblies may be carried one at either end of a casing centralizer.
