872,268. Ratchet clutches. SUFFOLK IRON FOUNDRY (1920) Ltd. Jan. 29, 1960 [Dec. 17, 1958], No. 40695/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXVII] A one-way clutch for an engine starter is provided with a series of friction shoes 16 engageable with a drum 15 on the crank-shaft 23, and carried by inclined links 29, 31 of an endless roller chain encircling a sprocket wheel 10 secured to the cord-operated starting pulley 6. The sprocket and pulley are mounted on a sleeve 9 carried on a shaft 4, one end of which is bolted to the starter housing 1, while the other carries a pair of friction washers between which is mounted a plate 17 with turnedover flange portions 18 disposed between the chain links carrying the shoes 16. Pulley 6 is provided with a recoil spring 7. Upon pulling the starting cord pulley 6 and sprocket 10 rotate anti-clockwise and links 29, 31 are brought into contact with the ends of flanges 18 to engage shoes 16 with drum 15 and thus start the engine. Under the action of spring 7 sprocket 10 is then rotated clockwise and links 29, 31 thus brought into contact with the opposite ends of flanges 18 to disengage shoes 16 from drum 15.
