Abstract

The production of thin layers of organic liquids on the evaporating surfaces of thinlayer evaporators is facilitated by exposing the surfaces to an electric gas discharge. Preferably the surfaces are exposed to the discharge before contact with the liquid to be evaporated, but whether applied before or during evaporation the gas discharge may be effected in the vapour of the liquid, e.g. as a glow discharge at reduced pressure, the evaporator surface serving as one of the gas discharge electrodes. Alternatively, a high voltage electrode may be insulated and passed through the evaporator wall, or the electrode may be arranged opposite the evaporator surface. Evaporators, illustrated diagramatically, to which the invention is applied are of the type in which liquid to be evaporated is fed as a jet or thrown by a rotor on to a stationary evaporator surface, or fed as a jet on to a rotating evaporator surface, or fed to an endless circulating belt which serves as the evaporator surface. Reference is also made to disc- or drum-shaped evaporators which revolve about a horizontal axis and dip into the liquid to be evaporated.
