Abstract

871,373. Compression moulding. HORN, D. June 21, 1957 [June 22, 1956], No. 19600/57. Class 87(2). Pressure members adapted to compress a mass in all three dimensions are arranged so that movement of one pressure member in its direction of pressing causes simultaneous movement of another member in its direction of pressing. Pressure may be applied firstly in two dimensions simultaneously and subsequently in the third dimension. Alternatively, precompression may be effected in one dimension and final compression in the second and third dimensions. As a further alternative, pressure may be applied in all three dimensions simultaneously. Figs. 3 and 4 show a mould comprising four wedge-shaped members 15 movable horizontally and vertically on sloping faces of a frame 16. On descent of a pressure member 18 the wedges 15 are forced downwardly and inwardly to the dotted line position in Fig. 3 against the action of springs 22 with an interposed plate 20. A final pressing is effected by a high pressure short stroke member 17. The pressure members may have grooved, ribbed or otherwise embossed faces, the embossing being on a separate laterally movable cover plate in the case of laterally movable platens. In Figs. 7, 8 (not shown) the upper pressure member is resiliently mounted and is centrally apertured to receive an additional vertically movable pressure member, pressure being applied on all sides simultaneously.
