Abstract

871,203. Automatic control systems for electrolytic baths. RIEDEL, A., and BACHMANN, F., [trading as RIEDEL & CO.]. Feb. 24, 1959, No. 6323/59. Class 38 (4). In an electrolytic bath, the current density at a cathode is maintained constant by controlling the current to the bath in dependence on the potential difference between a reference electrode and the cathode. As shown, a reference electrode 10, having a glass diffusion membrane and immersed in a buffer solution is connected by a syphon 11 to a position in a bath 1 adjacent to the surface of a cathode 2. The potential between the cathode and the reference electrode is compared with that of a constant voltage source 9 and the out-ofbalance voltage applied to a high-resistance input of a regulator 8, the output of which controls a servo-motor 6 positioning a slider of a resistor 5 through a worm-and-nut 7. The resistor 5 varies the current through the bath from a source 3 so as to maintain the reference electrode potential constant. It is stated that for a given arrangement of bath the current density is constant when the reference electrode potential is maintained constant. The syphon 11 is composed of an insulating material such as polyvinyl chloride.
