Abstract

In a fused electrolyte process of aluminium production, alumina is added to the cell to avoid the anode effect when a regular increase in the internal resistance of the cell is detected. In addition, the position of the anode system may be regulated according to the mean value of the internal resistance taken over a period between 1 second and 10 minutes and calculated from the ratio between the ohmic voltage drop in the cell (difference between the voltage across the cell terminals and an estimate of its counter - E.M.F.) and the current flowing therethrough; e.g. the anode may be displaced 1/3 mm with an internal resistance variation of 0.1 microhm.
