Abstract

1294909 Controlling electrolytic alumina cells ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 1 June 1970 26396/70 Heading C7B A method of controlling an electrolytic alumina reduction cell in order to avoid partial short circuits produced, for instance by pieces of floating carbon or by projections forming on the anodes, comprises taking simultaneous measurements of cell voltage and current, the values observed fluctuating with time; extrapolating the measurements to obtain the back e.m.f. of the cell; comparing this value of the back e.m.f. with a predetermined value; and if the determined value is less than the predetermined value (which indicates the presence of a short circuit), taking action to remove the cause of the short circuit. Apparatus used may include means for sampling and voltage and current values and a computer which receives, stores and extrapolates the values and prints out the results.
