Abstract
1,135,219. Electrolytic production of potassium permanganate. ELEKTROCHEMISCHES KOMBINAT BITTERFIELD VEB. Dec.20, 1965, No.53897/65. Heading C7B. Potassium permanganate is produced electrolytically from an unfiltered alkaline potassium manganate containing solution by dissolving and suspending a potassium manganate melt in a continuously operated rapid solver with cominuting action to form a suspension which contains 150- 250 gm/1 K 2 MnO 4 and 100-250 gm/l KOH, which suspension is continuously fed to 10-50 electrolysis cells in series provided with means for preventing sedimentation of undissolved solid fractions, e.g. air-lift pumps, such that the staying time of the electrolyte in the cells is 10-40 hours and electrolysis is carried out at 30-60‹ C. using a current density of 1-5 KA/M<SP>3</SP> such that 70-95% of the K 2 MnO 4 is electrolytically oxidized to KMnO 4 .
