Abstract
The invention comprises pyruvic acid derivatives of formula: <FORM:0871199/IV (b)/1> where R and R1, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen or C1-5 alkyl and Y is hydroxy or C1-5 alkoxy, provided that when Y is hydroxy and R is hydrogen, R1 is not hydrogen or methyl, and when Y is ethoxy, R and R1 are not both hydrogen. They are prepared by reacting a compound of formula: <FORM:0871199/IV (b)/2> where X is halogen with a thiolating agent, specifically ammonium hydrogen sulphide or sodium hydrogen sulphide. When the starting material is an acid, it is conventiently added in the form of an aqueous solution of its ammonium salt to the aqueous sulphide at, e.g. about -10 to 0 DEG C.; when an ester is used it may be added, optionally in the presence of a solvent such as methanol, to the aqueous sulphide at, e.g. about -5 to 5 DEG C. The halogeno starting materials may be prepared by treating with halogen a compound of formula: <FORM:0871199/IV (b)/3> Specification 871,198 is referred to.
