Abstract
870,401. Arc-rupturing in switches. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd., A. Dec. 22, 1959 [Sept. 26, 1958; March 5, 1959], Nos. 30893/58 and 7760/59. Class 38 (5). In an arc shoot comprising a stack of slotted spaced insulating plates 10 arranged transversely to the direction in which the arc is initially drawn, a portion of one or each of the two legs of each plate which extend on either side of the slot 11 in the plate is thicker than the portion of the plate extending around the closed end of the slot. Figs. 1 and 4 show an arrangement in which one leg 27 of each plate has insulating blocks 30 secured on each side of the leg. The successive plates are alternately disposed so that in the assembled stack only a small gap 35 exists between each block 30 on a leg 27 and the adjacent leg 28. These gaps are too small for downstriking of the arc to occur between adjacent legs but sufficient to prevent tracking occurring along the tunnel formed by the slots 11. The upper part of the slots 11 may diverge as shown in Fig. 1 and the plates 10 may have magnetic inserts 19 to provide a blow-out action. Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) illustrate an arrangement in which the slots are straight and the blow-out action is provided by a blow-out coil.
