Abstract

735,955. Arc rupturing in switches. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. March 26, 1953 [Aug. 12, 1952], No. 8386/53. Class 38 (5). A switch has an are chute with a plurality of slotted spaced insulating barrier plates, the slots being arranged adjacent the zone of arc initiation to form an arc passage and having their apices in staggered relation to elongate the arc, a number of the plates also being provided with apertures to control the diameter of the arc as it moves through the chute. The plates may be arranged in groups, one group being shown in Figs. 2 and 3 in which a first plate 38 has an inverted V-shaped slot 39 and the second and third plates 35, 36 have slots 30, 31 situated on either side of the vertical centre line of the plates. Plates 35 and 36 may also have apertures 37. Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), illustrate other arrangements of slots and apertures and combinations of plates.
