Abstract

869,759. Extrusion machines. ALLGAUER ALPENMILCH A.G. Dec. 2, 1957 [Dec. 1, 1956], No. 37528/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups VI and XVII] Packaging apparatus of the kind where a tube is formed about a nozzle, filled with liquid from the nozzle and transversely sealed to form individual packets has means whereby the nozzle and tube are sterilized at the beginning of a run. A tube is formed from a paper web 16 about concentric tubes, the outer of which, 1, conducts heated plastic material to an annular extruding orifice 9 from which it emerges to form a plastic lining for the tube. At the beginning of the run the tube is held flattened by rollers 11 on arms 10, the latter being shaped to embrace the tube between the extruder and rollers, so that sterilizing steam passing down the liquid filling pipe 2 via a valve 5 and escaping via a pipe 13 and valve 15, may build up to a pressure of about 5-10 atmospheres. Sterilization continues until the emerging tube reaches the jaws of known welding apparatus (not shown) and steam is cut off and sterile air or gas admitted via a valve 14 to space 12. Liquid e.g. milk is then introduced to compress the gas above it and the arms 10 are opened, the tube 2 withdrawing as the milk level rises. The level of milk in the tube may be regulated by the amount of gas introduced into it.
