Abstract

715,702. Packaging. STERLING DRUG, Inc. Nov. 29, 1951 [Dec. 12, 1950], No. 28016/51. Class 94 (1) Apparatus for making and filling successive sterile containers comprises a closed housing, means for advancing a two-layer strip of heat sealable material through the housing, a sterilizing device in the housing arranged at each side of the strip, means for forming the strip into a container, means for filling the container, crosssealing means for closing the container and severing the container from the strip, and an outlet in the wall of the housing for the filled containers. A flattened tube 20 of heat-sealable material.is passed from a reel 14 up between sterilizing ultra-violet radiators 58, 60 in an enclosure 22 and thence between ultra-violet tubes 76, 78 in a housing 42 which is kept supplied with sterilized air, at a pressure greater than atmosphere, through a port 124. In the housing 42 the tube 20 passes to slitting means 30, comprising a knife 80, Fig. 5, which slits the tube to allow the insertion of a filling pipe 92, an ultra-violet radiator 84 sterilizing the knife and the interior of the tube. A non-heat-sealable strip 24 is wound through the machine, off a reel 16 and onto a reel 18, passing parallel to the tube 20 and being guided into contact therewith just before it reaches a side sealer 32. The side sealer comprises opposed heated rollers 96, 98 (not shown), the roller 96 being hotter than the roller 98, and the strip 24 passing between the roller 96 and the tube 20 to prevent the tube sticking thereto. These rollers substantially sever two marginal strips 100 from the tube which strips are engaged by rollers 104 to feed the tube along, the strips subsequently being guided away from the filled tube. The filled tube is cross-sealed by heated members 110, 112, the member 112 being the hotter, and the strip 24 passing between it and the filled tube to prevent sticking. A feeler 117 contacts the filled tube before cross-sealing and is adapted to stop the filling if the tube assumes a more nearly cylindrical form due to too great a column of liquid therein. A pair of ultra-violet ray radiating tubes 119 sterilize the atmosphere in the housing 42 prior to use of the machine. Specification 703,850 is referred to as disclosing details of the filling and sealing means.
