Abstract
1375303 Aseptic packaging machines ALPURA-KORECO AG 10 July 1972 [9 July 1971] 32255/72 Heading B8C An apparatus for controlling the atmosphere of a chamber 14 in an aseptic packaging machine in which a plastics coated paper web 12 is withdrawn from a roll 11, passes through a bath 13 filled with sterilizing liquid and is fed, through seals 17, into the sterile chamber 14 where it is sprayed with sterile hot air from a blowing device 15<SP>1</SP> to free it from liquid residues and in which it is formed into a flexible tube 23 by forming members 20, 21, 22 is characterized in that the chamber 14 forms part of a flow circuit 35, 38, 39, 18 in which the mixture of chamber air and sterilizing agent is circulated by a fan 33. The apparatus is further characterized in that a throttle 43 is located on the suction side of the fan 33 to provide a slight over pressure in the sterile chamber 14, the flow circuit also being provided with means, such as a relief valve 47 which works in conjunction with a fresh air inlet 44, for limiting the concentration of sterilizing agent in the atmosphere within the chamber 14. A branch pipe 35, communicating with the bottom of the chamber 14, leads to a liquid separator 36, past the pressure relief valve 47 and the fresh air inlet pipe 44 which includes a float-type indicating meter 46, and introduces fresh air into the circuit to make up for mixture expelled through the valve 47. A pipe 39 connects the output of the fan 33 to a heater and filter unit 42, 40 which is connected by a pipe 18 to the blowing device 15<SP>1</SP>. The tube 23, which is longitudinally sealed after hot sterilized air has been blown from a hood 27 between the overlapping edges of the web 12, has a filling pipe 29 which fills the tube 23 up to a level 30, for example with pasteurized milk, the tube 23 being sub-divided into individual filled tetrahedral packages by two orthogonal pairs of revolving welding punches 31 only one pair of which is shown. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, the throttle comprises an annular space between the tube (23) and a ring (83) which is supported on a knife edge (82) on a member (81) of the sterile chamber (14), fresh air can be introduced into an extension (52) of the chamber through an annular gap (56) around the tube (23) and the blow-off valve comprises a weighted flap (64) leading to a cold water condenser (67). The concentration of the sterilizing agent may be limited by adding a chemical substance such as metal filings into the chamber to bind, or catalytically decompose the sterilizing agent:
