Abstract

1,059,454. Moulding hollow articles by extrusion. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. June 28, 1965 [June 30, 1964], No. 27328/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B8] Filled and sealed bottles &c. are formed in succession from a continuously downwardly extruded plastics tube 2, which is vacuum shaped and sealed by sectional moulds 5 moving with the tube, the filling taking place in the moulds from a pipe 3 in the extrusion head. Co-operating sections 5 of a plurality of moulds are successively brought together round the tube 2, the lower edges 7 of each mould sealing the tube and a container being formed by the creation of a vacuum between the inner wall of the mould and the tube. The formed container is then filled, through a line 3 arranged in the extrusion head 1, closed by the edges 7 of the following mould and removed from the mould as it opens. The mould halves 5 are coupled together by links 11 and resilient guides may be provided to ensure proper closing of the mould halves. The vacuum is obtained by temporarily connecting channels 6 in the moulds to vacuum lines 16. To avoid the creation of sub-atmospheric pressure within the container, while it is being formed, air or another gas, if required in a sterile condition, may be supplied at atmospheric pressure, through a line 15. The filling liquid is supplied at such a rate that the liquid level remains approximately at the lower end of the filling pipe. A separate nipping and welding device 17 may be provided to assist in sealing and separating the containers.
