Abstract

[Also in Division B8] A package is formed by vacuum moulding a heated thermoplastic tube between a pair of horizontally reciprocating moulds 4, 4<SP>1</SP> to form an open container, which is then filled with material and closed by heat sealing. As described, an extruded thermoplastic tube is passed between the mould parts 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, which are reciprocated to cause the heated tube to be held by suction heads 7, 7<SP>1</SP> and against the mould walls by suction through bores 23. Simultaneously the end of the tube is welded to form the base of the container. After the tube has been cut above the suction heads 7, 7<SP>1</SP> by a cutter 19, the container is filled with liquid or powered material from a filling member 3, after which head parts 8, 8<SP>1</SP> are reciprocated to heat seal the mouth of the container. On opening the mould halves, the filled package drops through an aperture 21. The moulding of the tube may be facilitated by using compressed air or by using a filling member 3 having a conically shaped end. The container may also be filled at low pressure to prevent any foam produced from rising into the neck of the container.
