Abstract

1372959 Injection moulding TZENTRALNA LABORATOBIA STEX 19 Oct 1972 [23 Oct 1971] 48275/72 Heading B5A An article is moulded by injecting a thermoplastic or thermosetting polymer melt into a mould chamber 7 containing gas under pressure, effecting soldification of the melt while subjecting it to a higher gas pressure in the mould, and admitting further melt into the mould while under the increased pressure to compensate for shrinkage during solidification. The melt is injected by an axially reciprocating screw (Fig. 1, not shown) or a ram 3 fed by a screw device 2 into a mould chamber 7 having semi-rigid walls and communicating via ducts 9 with a gas chamber 8. Alternatively (not shown) the gas chamber may be an unfilled portion of the mould chamber. Cavity 8 is made gas tight by a seal 10 and is connected to a container R of compressed air or nitrogen by way of a valve 5 which determines the two pressure levels used. The pressure in chamber 8 helps to stiffen the semi-rigid inner walls and removal of this stiffening pressure by closing valve 5 and opening vent valve 6 aids removal of the moulded article. The polymer may be polyethylene or polyformaldehyde. Gas and injection pressures are given.
